Night Village is a classical piece of music written and performed by pianist James Spiteri. To accompany this enchanting composition, James wanted to create a whimsical music video to capture audiences’ imagination.

The Project
The Night Village music video is inspired by the ethereal landscapes found in popular video games. James envisioned a fantasy village setting for his video through which we drift on a clear night. Our mission was to bring this vision to life, crafting a serene and magical atmosphere with slow, ‘sleepwalking’ camera movements that would perfectly complement his music.
Initially, James requested a 30-second loopable clip. However, as the project evolved, we extended our capabilities within Unreal Engine to create a full 3.5-minute video. This expansion allowed our artists to explore and experiment with world building and design. The result was a richly detailed and immersive visual experience far exceeding the original scope.
Director, Chris Randall notes, ‘Night Village is a celebration of all that is calm and mysterious when encountering a single instrument melody. The village itself is eerily deserted but the warm glow from the windows and lit torches are welcoming to we interlopers as we drift through the buildings. The result is both ghost story and lullaby.’

Production
Unreal Engine is a powerhouse in real-time rendering technology, making it ideal to build this fantasy world. Unreal Engine’s capabilities allowed us to build, animate, light, and render the world of Night Village efficiently and effectively. This also gave us the capability to quickly render and review the effectiveness of elemental effects like water, fire and wind. Use of Unreal made a tight deadline easy to manage, enabling us to meet the project timeline without compromising on quality.
The decision to use Unreal Engine was not just about speed and efficiency; it also aligned with our studio’s commitment to sustainability. Rendering high-quality, 3.5-minute long shots in just a few hours significantly reduced our energy consumption compared to traditional rendering methods, which can take days and consume substantial computer power and electricity. This approach aligns with our green initiatives, as we strive to minimise our environmental footprint in every new project we undertake.

The Village Journey
The music video features four main scenes and three cutaways:
- Scene One: Set on the village’s edge, it opens with a misty night scene, revealing a grand house on a hill, connected by an impressive bridge and a lonely bench by the riverbank.
- Scene Two: The camera glides over the riverbank, showcasing our hero water mill and chalets in the heart of the village.
- Scene Three: A closer look at the village reveals beautifully lit market stalls, creating a warm, inviting glow.
- Cutaways: Extreme close-ups highlight charming details such as a swaying tavern sign, dancing candle wicks, and a gently swinging lantern, adding depth to the village ambience.
- Scene Four: The final scene unveils a breathtaking view of a windmill amidst a rose field, offering a serene conclusion to the journey.

A Cinematic Conclusion
Our team edited each shot to harmonise with the piano beats and, to finish the video, we added a dandelion seed drifting in the wind towards the viewer. This poetic touch provided a cinematic ending, perfectly complementing James’s mesmerising music.
Night Village represents an extension of our other recent VR projects created in Unreal. It not only allowed us to create stunning visuals for a talented artist but also paved the way for future explorations in VR and video game environments for more immersive narrative purposes. We are proud of the final result and excited for the possibilities that lie ahead for James’ music!
